Adding to my already-busy to-do list, I'm trying to come up with a Christmas or New Year-themed picture for my friends *epona4 and ~GrayFox7, featuring their Zelda OC's. Rather than make them wearing red Santa hats or popping a champagne cork, however, I wanted to make it more authentic, and actually incorporate the religions and such from the Zelda games. So, I'd love to hear some opinions on how they might celebrate the Hylian New Year, or what other holidays they might have, and how to celebrate them. Any ideas?
You know, this is something I've wanted to know for God knows how long now!!

Glad I'm not the only one who's curious. The only holiday I can recall even being mentioned in the series is the carnival in Majora's Mask, and that's like a springtime festival to promote a good harvest in the coming year, or something like that.
Yeah, I remember that now! Man, I haven't played that game since I was like 9 or something!

Majora's Mask was one of my favorites, next to Ocarina of Time. You know what's interesting, though? Although there's no mention of the Goddesses in Majora's Mask, you can find the Triforce in the Stone Tower. It even appears to be used in a blasphemous way, leading to speculation that the Stone Tower is like a "Tower of Babel," or act of defiance against the Goddesses. And, you know how in the Bible when the builders of the Tower of Babel were punished by being made to speak different languages? There's speculation that the builders of the Stone Tower were punished by the tower being turned upside down. You can read more about this theory here: [link] Some of it's kinda far-fetched, but some of it makes me go "Huh."

Heh, we had exactly this problem when wanting to do a holiday RP last week. So we threw around ideas and ended up with Long Night, on the winter solstice.
It kind of took on an interesting dual theme: Though Long Night is the time when light wins over the dark so the sun can return, it's also sort of the dark's last hurrah, so unkind acts draw bad fortune. Therefore everyone spends the night making merry with friends and generally showing good will, so that nothing bad happens and the sun can return.
Personally, I always figure a combination of lots of the local festivals seen in the games, with a handful of major kingdom-wide festivals, which I place at the solstices/equinoxes since Hyrule is basically still an agricultural society.
I think I had the Summit festival at spring equinox, so the last winter snows would be gone and the roads would be open. Mostly a trading holiday, as vendors far and wide are attracted by those travelling to Castle Town for the Summit.
And I had midsummer as the Festival of the Goddesses, where all three are honored equally (as they generally are, in the Hyrule in my head, I have a whole deviation about this).
Didn't have anything for fall. But a Festival of Creation should go in the year somewhere, though, I'd think. It's possible Creation should go in spring, and the Summit at fall equinox. HMMM. Think I'll do that.
And I like the idea of Long Night, so that'll probably get thrown into the bubbling pot of my brain too.
Not that I don't read a lot into some of the Zelda things myself, but wow. That dude seemed to have had phalluses on the brain.
That, and I've never noticed that the Zeldaverse has any kind of "hell" -- not in the sense of eternal punishment of souls, anyway. The real-world spiritual roots of Zelda are Shinto, if anything; I tend to feel that makes any attempt to draw parallels to Christianity a bit misguided.
Awesome. You're incredibly helpful! I do like the idea of a holiday to celebrate when the days start getting longer again, as in light's triumph over dark. It almost reminds me of something of Wiccan origin, or some other nature-based religion like that.
The only thing I could really come up with was a Hylian New Year, which would be when they observe the Goddesses creating the world and leaving them the Triforce. No ideas on how to celebrate that, though.
