Can't afford a Wacom Tablet?
Photoshop Pen Tool too tedious?
Or just afraid your image will lose some of the original detail in the transition from pencil sketch to digital illustration?
Look no further. :D
Nothing too fancy. This tutorial just details a technique I stumbled across when I was working on "Len: One Sultry Gerudo" [link] Follow these steps, and you can keep your black and white pencil sketch as lineart, and still color in the image without losing the lineart quality.
No Wacom tablet required for this technique! But you will need a pencil sketch, a scanner, and any version of Photoshop.

I actually lose most of the quality when I scan, since I found that using more than 300 dpi made the image too big to get colored quickly. O:

Most folks I know just use the "Multiply" setting on their scanned lineart layer and put it above the color layers. This makes the color show through the white areas of the lineart. Then you just have to color inside the lines.

I also like to use different layers for the coloring and the shading (and the highlights, on the rare occasions I do that). It makes it easy to clean up a shading mistake without having to fix the underlying color.

Multiply? I've never tried that. I'll have to experiment with that.
Yeah, I usually use separate layers for all the separate colors, as well as for highlights. Since this is just a quick tutorial for a quick illustration, I just didn't really get into using layers.

Multiply on the lineart layer will totally save you the steps with duplicating and tweaking your drawing, yep.
